First of all, almost all Formal writing follows a certine format and style which is MLA or APA. Essays, reasach papers, speech papers, and summary papers all should be written in a formal style. In formal writing you should avoid expressions, contractions, clichés, and abbreviated words. Passive voice and more complex sentences are prefferred. In some cases for e-mails and birthday cards, they should follow either Formal or Informal writing depending on how close the person is to you. If he/she is close to you so informal writing will be fine and vice versa.
Second, Informal writings doesn't follow any certine format. We use Informal writing almost every day to our lives. Notes, comments, text messages, and online chatting are informal writing. They may use expressions, contractions, clichés, abbreviated words, short and simple sentence. Mostly Informal writing is used between you and your family or friends. I do not see anything wrong with this, in fact I see it helpful because it save time.
In conclusion, basically there are two different types of writing; Formal and Informal. The main thing is to remember that both are correct. Formal English is used mainly in academic writing and business communications, whereas Informal English is appropriate way to communicate with family and friends. Keep in mind that you are writing to whom so you can make the right decisions. And whichever style you write make sure you do not mix between the two.
